Andy Warhol's Desacralization

Andy Warhol was a Byzantine Catholic, interestingly enough. There's legends that he went to church every day,. But nonetheless, in his art, he is inspired by icon. What he does is almost like a return to iconography or ultimate desacralization. He understands this idea of a centralized image which is just framed simply and presented as something to look at. And so the common object, the can of soup is an object of participation. That is eating food is still something that we can claim is participative.
