The History of the Minimum Wage

At emancipation, there were two industries that sought to hire newly freed black people and have them live on tips. Black women were hired by the restaurant industry and were not so lucky. The idea that black women could be paid nothing but tips was made law in 1938. And we went from a zero dollar wage in 1938 all the way up to $2.13 an hour, the current federal minimum wage for tipped workers in 2023.
