In the early days of his career he worked as a lab technician. He wanted to learn more about how DNA was made but had trouble staining it. His wife suggested he go to a garage lab in Somerville, Massachusetts called boss lab. After spending six weeks working on what's called a heat shock transformation protocol they taught him biology. And from there he got into research and eventually found something that works which is really great.
