The Origins of Edward's Charters

The method of Edward's coronation and composition of his court suggest that he was looking beyond the old divisions of the Heptarchy. In two Charters, dated to 901, we see him appearing as Rex Saxonum and Anglorum Saxonum Rex,. The King of the Saxons and the King of the Anglo-Saxons. And critically in these Charters, they mention King Athlewolf, Edward's grandfather, and they refer to him simply as the King ofthe Wes Saxons.
