The Pathophysiology of GERD

There's a number of risk factors for GERD. The lower sauphageal sphincter relaxes normally to allow food to get from the esophagus into the stomach. But patients who have reflux disease oftentimes have increased number or duration of these transient relaxations, which is why they might have symptomatic reflux. We know that patients who are obese are also at risk of reflux related symptoms.
