The Importance of Class in Fashion

Zimol's view that fashion develops on the basis of class distinctions doesn't capture what's so particular about fashion, Lipa Vetsky argues. The exorbitant number of choices are available to the higher class when it comes to fashion is meant precisely to give members of that class a sense of individuality relative to one another. So if there were only one fancy handbag, the scarcity of the commodity would be deeply at odds with the self-understanding of the class as a whole.
