Pol Pot sees saboteurs and foreign agents everywhere. Ex-pats returning from overseas are viewed with particular suspicion, even if they are avowed supporters of the regime. Returnees are expected to prove their credentials through tests of character that last months or years. City dwellers, foreigners, Buddhist monks, the Muslim Cham minority find themselves in the firing line at one time or another.
