GPT-4 and the Interpretability of Language Models
GPT-4 can be used to measure the passage of time in fiction. David Baman has replicated this with Burt and shown that in fact Burt also is pretty close to human level. The other thing that was fun to me about working with um a conversation model and prompt engineering it was the way I put it is the model gets to talk back to you when you're designing the research question It will tell you like because you have to do chain of thought prompting to get it to come up with anything at all.

Ted is a professor in the School of Information Sciences with an appointment in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Trained in English literary history, he turned his research focus to applying machine learning to large digital collections. His work explores literary patterns that become visible across long timelines when we consider many works at once—often, his work involves correcting and enriching digital collections to make them more amenable to interesting literary research.
