I was there for eight years and then suddenly, I was like, I asked to go on contract from being on staff. And they said, no, even though it would have saved the money. It's that moment of like, Oh, this place is not looking out for me in the way that I naively and foolishly have been thinking that they would. Back then you could literally count how many black female columnists or like regular like journalists, they were, especially a staff. But as you said, I did fall really unseen.
