Simon Tisdall: The American Revolution wasn't ignited because the colonists didn't want to be British. It was ignited because they wanted to be British, and they felt they were not being given the rights of British citizenship. He says that's why you had someone like John Dickinson who wrote the nation's first constitution, the Articles of Confederation,. Later signed our current constitution, refused to sign the Declaration of Independence. And so this is, again, this example of diverse people engaging in this great conversation, he says.
What do the words of America’s Founding Fathers mean today? In this conversation produced in partnership with Sotheby’s, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik, scholar Dr Anika Prather and Sotheby’s books specialist Selby Kiffer explore the historical significance of the writings of America’s Founding Fathers for the twenty-first century.
