The Adam Ragusea Podcast

CHAPTER

The Tomato Scream

Scientists in Tel Aviv observe that the high frequency clicks from their stressed tomatoes were squarely within the perceivable frequency range of insect hearing. Insects like moths and also small mammals like mice, they would absolutely be able to hear the sound of a nearby tomato plant getting a little too dry. The moth listens for a tomato plant that is just starting to die, so it lays its eggs on that plant instead of on the other plants.
