Lysaeus, to the People of the Jews, Greeting.
Lysaeus wrote a letter to Maccavius on behalf of the Jews. The king agreed to all that Lysaeus urged, and granted every request he made in writing. He also promised to help promote their welfare if they would maintain goodwill toward him. But when it was time for them to depart from Jerusalem, an army led by horsemen with weapons of gold appeared at their head. They hurled themselves like lions against the enemy and slew eleven thousand of them; most got away stripped and wounded.
