The Eastern Empire and Christianity
Egypt was the Empire's most important economic asset. The Nile's rich alluvial soils produced a large surplus of wheat and flax, which would go toward making linens. Egypt had a monopoly on papyrus and had the finest glass manufacturing of the Byzantine world. As in Syria, Greek was spoken in any major town or city, but not in the countryside.
