The legal concept of genocide at the moment rests very much on this corporate notion of groups. So what's wrong about genocide is the destruction of a group. The important point here I think is that you could also try to bring about the destruction of the group without engaging in killing. For example by trying to assimilate people or by trying to give them incentives to stop reproducingYou could even be guilty of destroying a group perhaps not intentionally by failing to reproduce appropriately.
