The Charitable Attitude of Augustine in the Interpretation of the Bible

Augustine suggests that the Bible necessarily gives rise to multiple interpretations. Augustine's openness to other interpretations is of course itself an example of this correct charitable attitude. All humans are born into a state of sin, and no matter how admirable their intentions, they will fall back into sin over and over again if left to their own resources. Even once someone converts to Christianity and receives baptism, every day will still be a struggle against temptation. If only God's help can allow us to avoid evil, can we really say that we retain morally significant freedom?
