A soul mate is an ongoing connection with another individual that the soul picks up again in various times and places over lifetimes. The person that you're so attracted to will also trigger you the most. Sometimes we are connected up with our soul mate because of the sol contract that we together agreed upon before incarnating. That sole contract may be fulfilled and complete before the lifetime ends, and then you move on to another partner or another situation.
