The Origins of Headphones

The first telephones that started to show up in public life after 1876 had a like handheld speaker. And since then, all phones, even smartphones are the same: You hold it up to your ear with one hand. That's because holding a phone is fine, unless you are a telephone switchboard operator. Operator not only need to hear you, but to have both of their hands free to actually make that connection within two shakes of a lambs tail. But it was this need from telephone operators that spurred this development of over the head devices. It's the reason within only 10 years of the telephone being invented, you started to see the word head telephone being tossed around in like advertisements
