Is Hoover's Mafia a Helping Arm for the United States?
By the 50s, organized crime is becoming enough of an issue that he is starting to respond. In 1957, there's this famous moment when a police officer in upstate New York stumbles upon this gathering of mob leaders from around the entire country. That's really the moment that publicly and certainly for Hoover, he says, okay, I've been saying there's no national crime syndicate. But apparently they do all meet in meetings to, you know, divvy up their territory and such.
