Jane Mayer: For Clarence Thomas, it had been a long journey to the White House. She says he'd settled for a low paying job as a staff lawyer for Missouri's attorney general. He followed Danforth to the United States Senate, where he worked as a staffer. As he rose in Washington, there was trouble in his personal life, she writes.
