In 1828, Lincoln and Alan gentry pilot a cargo laden flatboat for Alan's father down to New Orleans. The trip on the Mississippi is less eventful than that of the yet-to-be-created fictional characters of Huckleberry Finn and Jim. At any rate, upon returning home, Lincoln dutifully does as the law requires a man under 21. He hands his wages over to his father. By this point, Lincoln is far closer to his stepmother than his father. Having to forfeit hard-earned wages to his pop might not be helping the situation either.
