The Role of God in Both Conceptions of the World
There's this substrate of Christianity, particularly in America and other places. John Locke was a deeply religious man who thought atheism should be made illegal. If the universe is mechanical, all you need then is a doctrine that can replace God as the prime mover. And I think that is the general, the genuine sort of beginning of bifurcation into atheism.
