Condusse was thrown in the clink for something he said, or something he was proposing. Voltaire is another interesting character in all of this because although we remember Voltaire as a philosopher of the Enlightenment, Voltaire actually wrote some science fiction. And one of his famous pieces, Micromagus, was a narrative on extremely advanced alien beings visiting the earth and observing how arrogant and simple headed humanity was at that time.
