In purely geo political terms, ukraine is not as important. It was in 19 91, i think, really the determination of the ukranian government to secede that doomed the soviet union. Many russians wanted to get the centralasians out of their country because they didn't want to have to subsidize them. So again, you can understand why nationalist, the revoltionist feeling was strong in russia and why empire enjoyed such an ostalgia.
