The Spice Girls' 1996 song Wannabe introduced a generation of girls to feminism and in power bits. Being a teen girl in the 90s was tough, tougher than it had been in previous decades. Psychologist Mary Pfeiffer's book Reviving Ophelia became a best-selling publishing phenomenon. Nelson Yarrow says teen girls were bombarded with the perfect girl ideal thanks to Teen Vogue, Seventeen, YM, and Sassy.
