The History of Magnetism
We first realised that magnetism was a thing when we started looking at stones and how they were affected by the environment. The earliest extant reference to load stones is in an ancient Chinese text called the Book of the Devil Valley Master. And so these load stones were carried on board ships as they were going off and exploring the seas. It was a way for them to have to know which direction they were going on.
