Is It Necessary for Us to Do Work?

The core of post workism makes a mistake at both ends. It naturalizes what is a socially contingent feature of work, and then on the other hand it thinks that just because something is necessary doesn't make it unfree. The welfare state at its best was a public decision about what our basic needs were independent of the market. Rather than really making that decision democratically, right? So people think you can't make work free because it's just imposed on us, but it isn't just opposed. And so to recognize that we're always already making that choice just means taking responsibility for it and doing it in a collective and democratic way.
