The Impact of Mobile Phone Detection on License Suspensions

New South Wales and Queensland are the only two states that have introduced mobile phone detection cameras. They're cameras that use artificial intelligence to detect if someone's using their phone while driving. The cameras capture images of every driver that passes by, the AI assessors, whether or not they may or may not be on their phone. If they're not, the image is discarded, but if they are, then it's forwarded on to a officer to assess and then potentially administer a fine. In January of this year, the total number of fines issued for mobile phone offenses was 16,811 - up from 1,000 three years ago.
