AI Is the Future

Tens of AI executives, engineers and researchers recently signed a statement warning that mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority. Is this just a distraction from the more mundane threats that big tech already poses to humanity? Or is something else and maybe weirder at work, something that gets at the tech industry's own, own self-conception?
