Formula One Drivers Break the Brakes a Lot
The problem with hot blowing is, of course, it uses extra fuel. But what I found really interesting was that this all comes from a place of how Formula One drivers break and how the engines work. Drivers try to take advantage of maximum downforce. So they smash the brakes because they have so much more stopping power. And if you make no allowance, the vacuum that gets pulled in the cylinders as you've come off throttle and are breaking is enough to severely impact the reliability and the length of life of that power unit. The estimates I saw for hot blowing were up to one second per lap. Cold blowing, the estimates I saw were three or four tents a lap for cold blowing.
