Archaeological evidence from burial sites forms a very large part of the evidence during our period of study. You might be unsurprised to learn that people were shorter than today. Men almost all between 5'4 and 5'8, women between 5'2 and 5'4. Adults probably lived with nagging arthritis and aching joints. The state of women's legs suggest they spent long hours squatting, probably grinding corn. Children died in great numbers at Poundbury - their short lives were the result for poor diet over many years.
