The first chinese men to work in America were cantinese speakers from the coastal province of gwan dong, as were many thousands who then came next to america. They were hired by the rail company central pacific to help build the transcontinental railroad and faced extraordinary discrimination on this project. With the railroad completed by the 18 seventies, some chinese attempted to settle throughout the west, yet many fled for their lives. We can trace the first permanent ch ese community to the years just after the civil war.
