WHO researchers have used statistical modelling to estimate the number of excess deaths associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The WHO say there's been an extra spike of about 15 million deaths over those two years. For example, if someone couldn't get cancer screening because health services were disrupted and they subsequently died earlier than you'd expect, that would count as one of these excess deaths.
