The Semantic Assignment of Genders in Tamil Languages
Corbett: Most of the time in these languages, you get sort of the semantic assignment gets priority. If a noun ends in an accented vowel, it's marked as feminine for phonological reasons. What he thinks is sort of happening with Tamil is that like rational are all classed in the masculine and feminine category; things that don't fit into that are put into the non-rationals.
