Deconversion Moments
Brendan Manning's memoir he remembers one of those deconversion moments that came when he least expected it. He had been living amongst the poor in rural France shoveling manure washing dishes and bringing water to villages villagers on a donkey's back. In prayer one evening in a chapel by himself the spirit of God exposed his hidden selfishness. Brendan felt like my life was a waste I determined to commit spiritual suicide cut myself off from God and the church and my brothers and turn my back on it all. Another priest found Brendan in the chapel as this priest entered and Brendan was leaving and asked him what had happened. The other priest said you are on the threshold of receiving the greatest grace of your life
