MUNK DEBATE ON AI (COMMENTARY) [DAVID FOSTER]

Machine Learning Street Talk (MLST)

CHAPTER

The Threat of Language Models

Daniel Dennett said that the real threat of language models is the erosion of our autonomy. And I was in Zurich last week speaking with Janik and he actually said that he loved this idea. He had to get on board with that, which I was very surprised about. But also the way this is always framed is that there's going to be some global AI nexus essentially making all of the decisions. So then from a legal perspective, I think the question becomes where does the responsibility lie? Why not say any program that you write should actually only be able to be run on certain amount of limited compute? Where do you draw the line even between something that's artificial intelligence and not?
