The Importance of Social Structuring in War
CNN's John Sutter looks at the ways in which social structures can create or enhance cross-cutting allegiances. He says that by cleverly structuring things, you can tamp down people's natural vigor to make easy outgroups. We're a massively social species capable of such empathy, but it's just not difficult to set up situations where we're capable of violence, he says.
