In 2003 the EU backed European hydrogen and fuel cell technology platform forecast up to 5 million hydrogen cars on the streets by 2020. There are today fewer than 20,000 heavily subsidised hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road globally served by just 400 almost exclusively publicly funded hydrogen filling stations. By now most car makers have abandoned their hydrogen car programs including Mercedes-Benz, Ford and General Motors. VW has come down very firmly on the side of battery electric vehicles though it keeps a token fuel cell program going with one Audi SUV perhaps in the pipeline for 2023.
