The Importance of History in a Patient's GI Bleeding

When we think about GI bleeding, first stratify your patient into slow versus fast bleeding. Identify whether it is upper or lower GI bleeding and then dive deeper into a more focused history as well as an underlying cause. Abdominal cramping, frequent stooling and weight loss may point to inflammatory bowel disease. Easy bruising, CTKI and mucosal bleeding may point to a coagulation disorder.
