David Bianculli: In 1986, ABC bought ESPN for $188 million. He says it's the first and last time that somebody owned 100% of a network. The deal was negotiated by Tom Murphy, who is on the board of Texaco. CNN had just launched in Atlanta; Turner wanted to buy ESPN as its 24-hour news channel.
