Linguistics is the study of, it's this thing called pragmatics. It's how language is used for social purposes. A lot of these things refer to conversational Maxims but they can apply to the written space as well. So if you're going to deliberately be obtuse or deliberately be verbose, you're doing it for a particular social purpose or else you're sort of being annoying in the way that you're writing - and I'm really all about that.
