The Importance of Transference in Psychoanalysis

Transference is one of the things around psychoanalysis and Freud that gets misunderstood a lot. I know that I used to misunderstand it. How did you misunderstand it? I thought that it was about falling in love with your analyst, basically. And then I started to think, well, maybe it's more making your analyst a surrogate for another person in your life - not necessarily a lover but could be a mother or a father or a sister or a brother.
