The Consequences of Retributivism

The main alternative on the table is retributivism. That view holds that we should punish people because they deserve to suffer. In the mid 20th century, this view was mostly considered a barbaric view. The idea of taking pleasure at the suffering of other people is just not something that we should do. It's just not plausible to think that the suffering of offenders is a good thing.
