The fence cutting wars in Texas were sparked by ranchers who wanted to remove barbed wire from public land. The idea that the open range belonged to all was seen as a founding doctrine of Western society, says author Jack Schlossberg. "It's important to remember that this was something that was very much imposed and was extremely unpopular," he adds.
