When I was working in the Gopi during the Cultural Revolution before China opened up, all economic activities in China were controlled by the state. There was not a market economy. And now people talk about China's development model and industrial policy as if state control of economic activities is a panacea or some magic to push the economy to grow. In fact, China grew in the past 40s and more years by abandoning the old state control system and by embracing a market economy, which is really capitalism.
