i think it's really easy to put blame on particular groups of people, especially if you're taking like a cursory analysis of a massive problem like poverty. But when it comes to something like poverty, and this is true of all the big issues, you probably would have to break it down into something much, much smaller. It's something like le in this district don't have access to high quality education, so how can we improve the education system there? And that's probably the life's work of someone. The point is that it takes work. i wanted to bring up what i think is one of the most compelling philosophies around giving, which is effective altruism.
We believe that the desire to give is universal, but is just as much a skill as anything else in life. In this episode, Cal and Steph discuss the how you can make a difference during your limited time on this earth, with the limited resources you have -- especially during times like these.
They dive into...
- Creative ways that people have supported Ukraine
- Striking a balance between hedonism and altruism
- Making difficult problems tractable
- A breakdown of the gender pay gap
- Impact starting with small actions
- WTF is effective altruism?
- Whether charities should be structured differently
