In 374, the Bishop of Milan died. The sitting Bishop just so happened to have been of Aryan persuasion. Ambrose showed up on the day that the new Bishop was to be elected with the sole objective of keeping the peace. Though a Nicene by disposition, Ambrose had always been tolerant of Aryanism in his role as prefect. When the election started to get out of hand, Ambrose stepped in to see if he couldn't settle everyone down. And then someone in the crowd had a bright idea, and they shouted, Ambrose for Bishop.
