Don't Be Afraid of Individual Words
Most Japanese people do actually know English words. Don't be afraid to put a really heavy Japanese accent on as well. If you get a taxi, Shinjuku, don't go, hi there, I want to go with Shinjuku. Try and say the same with taxes. They're not going to understand what you're saying.
