In order to manufacture something, whether it's turning soil into cotton, soil into sugar, or if it's turning the cotton into clothing, you need to control the labor. And so what the modern capitalist system has found is a way to lead people formerly free, but to still Control the labor. This is, of course, the basis for the hostility to organize labor on a part of businesses. The states and the United States with the weakest protections for labor are always the former slave states.
