There's much debate in the centuries in rome after the assassination of julius caesar, as to whether it was an acceptable act to kill him. One of the issues was always that he seemed to aspire to kingship. So subsequently, rulers were very careful about how they represented themselves to avoid that sense that they were taking on a crown and becoming a king.
