The way to stop diversity being a defensive thing is, I hate demonizing any group. What you really want to do is make the argument for why cognitive diversity helps us to fulfill our purpose. That way it becomes a positive phenomenon rather than one that can incite defensive responses of the kind you describe. Everyone has a huge amount to contribute to a diverse group. The problem is when 85, 90, 100% are from a specific background because that's shutting their capacity to learn,. If they're stuck in it, that's not good for them either.
